“State of the Waters: Cape Cod” Internship, May through August 2024

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) seeks a college- or graduate-level intern to assist with our “State of the Waters: Cape Cod” project. This is a seasonal full-time position that is paid hourly and not eligible for benefits.

Description: In 2018, APCC initiated the State of the Waters: Cape Cod to grade water quality of coastal waters, ponds, and drinking water in order to raise public awareness of water quality issues on Cape Cod, to identify opportunities for water quality improvement and restoration, and to promote action to improve water quality through a Water Action Plan. Each year APCC analyzes and grades the most recent water quality data available and provides an updated report via an interactive website and outreach (https://capecodwaters.org).

Responsibilities: The intern will report to the Director of Science Programs. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Collection and organization of water quality data for coastal embayments, ponds, and public water supplies;
  2. Data analysis, scoring and grading of water quality data using established Excel formulas;
  3. Conducting statistical analyses to summarize results using Excel;
    Collection and analysis of drinking water Consumer Confidence Reports;
  4. Preparation of data summaries, coordination with APCC’s GIS contractor, and participation in team meetings.
  5. Assist with other projects as needed.

Minimum Education Requirements: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., water resources, hydrology, limnology, natural resource management, etc.) and experience and skills as described below.

Required Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with collection and analysis of water quality data;
  • Experienced in use of Microsoft Excel, including data entry, calculations, statistics, formulae, and ability to work with multiple spreadsheets;
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office 365 and Word;
  • Basic GIS skills (while GIS mapping will be done by APCC’s GIS contractor, the intern may be asked to collect GIS data from data sources);
  • Ability to perform work quickly and accurately and to provide deliverables on schedule;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, electronic).

Period of performance: May through end of August 2024.

Location: Due to construction at APCC headquarters, the intern will work remotely offsite on a computer or laptop loaned by APCC. There may be occasions when travel may be necessary, so the applicant should possess their own vehicle and have a valid driver’s license.

Working conditions:
This is a seasonal full-time position that is paid hourly and not eligible for benefits. The work week is 37.5 hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30.
