“State of the Waters: Cape Cod” Internship, May through August 2024

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) seeks a college- or graduate-level intern to assist with our “State of the Waters: Cape Cod” project. This is a seasonal full-time position that is paid hourly and not eligible for benefits.

Description: In 2018, APCC initiated the State of the Waters: Cape Cod to grade water quality of coastal waters, ponds, and drinking water in order to raise public awareness of water quality issues on Cape Cod, to identify opportunities for water quality improvement and restoration, and to promote action to improve water quality through a Water Action Plan. Each year APCC analyzes and grades the most recent water quality data available and provides an updated report via an interactive website and outreach (https://capecodwaters.org).

Responsibilities: The intern will report to the Director of Science Programs. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Collection and organization of water quality data for coastal embayments, ponds, and public water supplies;
  2. Data analysis, scoring and grading of water quality data using established Excel formulas;
  3. Conducting statistical analyses to summarize results using Excel;
    Collection and analysis of drinking water Consumer Confidence Reports;
  4. Preparation of data summaries, coordination with APCC’s GIS contractor, and participation in team meetings.
  5. Assist with other projects as needed.

Minimum Education Requirements: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., water resources, hydrology, limnology, natural resource management, etc.) and experience and skills as described below.

Required Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with collection and analysis of water quality data;
  • Experienced in use of Microsoft Excel, including data entry, calculations, statistics, formulae, and ability to work with multiple spreadsheets;
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office 365 and Word;
  • Basic GIS skills (while GIS mapping will be done by APCC’s GIS contractor, the intern may be asked to collect GIS data from data sources);
  • Ability to perform work quickly and accurately and to provide deliverables on schedule;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, electronic).

Period of performance: May through end of August 2024.

Location: Due to construction at APCC headquarters, the intern will work remotely offsite on a computer or laptop loaned by APCC. There may be occasions when travel may be necessary, so the applicant should possess their own vehicle and have a valid driver’s license.

Working conditions:
This is a seasonal full-time position that is paid hourly and not eligible for benefits. The work week is 37.5 hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30.

Restoration Coordinator

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) seeks Restoration Coordinator to help advance the goals of its Ecosystem Restoration Program.

The Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) supports towns and other community groups in planning, implementation and monitoring of restoration projects on Cape Cod. Established in 2015, the vision of the ERP (formerly known as the Restoration Coordination Center) is to provide additional resources (capacity, technical expertise and funding) to increase the number and success rate of restoration projects on Cape Cod.

Responsibilities include managing restoration projects such as fish passage, river and bog restoration, stormwater management, and coastal resilience projects; managing and developing project and consultant engineer scope of work and budgets; grant administration, reporting, and grant writing; working effectively with multiple partners and constituents (town, state, federal, non-profit, community groups, and public) to plan, initiate, manage and complete multi-year restoration projects, and assisting with seasonal field survey work as needed.

The position reports to APCC’s Restoration Manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, natural science, climate science or environmental science, engineering, communications, or policy from a four-year college or university. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience demonstrating competence in the essential job elements described above. A master’s degree in the above fields may take the place of up to two (2) years of professional experience.

Candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be proficient in Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Excel, and Word in a PC environment.

  • Familiarity with Zoom, Microsoft Teams or other remote meeting applications.
  • Well-organized, and detailed planner. Able to work independently.
  • Academic or professional experience and knowledge about restoration and coastal ecology such as salt marsh, river, cranberry bog, freshwater wetland, fish, shellfish and/or coastal shoreline habitats; green infrastructure stormwater management to improve water quality; and/or coastal resilience projects involving living shorelines, green infrastructure and other nature-based solutions.
  • Ability to develop and manage project plans including scope, schedule, budget and deliverables as well as management of consultant contracts and invoices.
  • Experience reviewing technical documents such as feasibility studies, monitoring reports, design plans, permit applications, construction specifications and reports.
  • Strong technical writing and proofreading skills including experience drafting grant applications and scientific reports.
  • Strong communications skills and experience working with project teams involving town, state, federal staff as well as other local stakeholders (e.g. non-profits, community groups, general public).
  • Outreach and education experience including engagement with the public, and writing for webpages, print materials, and social media.
  • Field data collection and survey work experience in an academic, professional or volunteer capacity (e.g. plant, bird, fish, water, land survey, mapping, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Desirable but not Required

  • Familiarity with regional habitat management and restoration plans and programs such as the Cape Cod Commission’s Clean Water Act Section 208 Plan, the NRCS Cape Cod Water Resources Restoration Program, the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration program and other regional restoration programs.
  • Background or expertise in freshwater systems including fish passage restoration.
  • Scientific communications or journalism background including engagement with the press and development of press releases and/or media alerts.
  • Academic or professional experience reviewing and/or commenting on state or federal policies or regulations. Familiarity with environmental policies and regulations impacting restoration permitting and review.
  • Graphic design skills along with photo and video editing.
  • Experience creating GIS maps and story maps.
  • Experience working with underserved communities to support inclusivity and diversity in project planning and development.
  • Fluent, both speaking and writing, in Portuguese, Spanish, native American languages or other languages.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, year-round position with salary and benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience. The typical work schedule is a 37.5-hour work week over 5 days per week M-F. Work is conducted in a typical office environment, and occasionally involves field work.

Position offers flextime, remote work, and hybrid time. Candidate must be located within the region to allow for travel to in-person meetings, site visits, field survey and events as needed. Occasional (annual or semi-annual) travel off Cape or outside the region for meetings or conferences. Candidate must have dependable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Mileage will be reimbursed.

Physical Requirements of the Job:
Position involves walking, standing or sitting to present or discuss projects with individuals or large groups. Some field work support as needed including traversing small streams, wooded trails, densely vegetated areas, mucky unstable ground; navigating small obstacles such as fallen trees, fences, or densely vegetated areas; and lifting heavy objects weighing 10-50 lbs.

APCC Eco-landscape Audit Program Manager

APCC is seeking a qualified individual who is passionate about native plants and ecological landscapes to be the team leader of APCC’s Eco-landscape Audit Program. It will be the second year for the program designed to offer ecological landscape consultations for homeowners.

The program team will consist of one or two summer interns and the manager will be the team leader. The position is responsible for, but not limited to, being the point of contact for the program, scheduling of appointments with clients, traveling to and conducting the on-site with the homeowner assisted by the intern(s), mentoring the summer interns, reviewing and/or preparing eco-audit reports. Position reports to the Associate Director for Education.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. The candidate must be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about native plants, green infrastructure, general natural history, and best ecological landscape practices. Landscape design skills are not a requirement but are a plus. Foremost, this is an educational program and therefore the candidate must enjoy engaging with the public and be able to communicate information effectively and have good writing skills.
Minimum Education Requirements: Undergraduate degree in environmental science/sustainability/landscape design or equivalent education and demonstrated experience.

Working Conditions. The is a temporary position – April through November, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Candidate must have their own dependable vehicle for transportation to appointments Cape-wide.

Position requires moderate mobility, and the ability to traverse uneven terrain as may be necessary to conduct site inspections.
